For the artist as for the art lover or the critic, artistic practice brings into existence the irreducible dimension of the wager. The claim to recognize those artworks whose importance will be recorded by the future is, of course, only a claim, a supposition. But without this risk, this rash claim, this wager, the art lover has no legitimate existence – and nor does the artist. (Jean-Michel Ribettes)
